School Emblem

The symbol of St Mark the Evangelist, the winged lion, could be said to be a symbol of courage. It became a symbol of the writer of the earliest gospel based on visions described in Revelation 4:7 and Ezekiel 1:10 of four living creatures before the throne of God. In Mark 1:3 the voice of John the Baptist is described as “crying out” in the wilderness. This was linked with a roaring lion. Later the lion was seen to denote the strength of Mark’s word. Mark himself clearly had some courage; in the book of Acts he is described as accompanying the apostles on their early missions.
